Looking Back With Pride As one Scouting family, we move together in 2014.

WE’VE COME A LONG way together in 2013. A very long way. I say this not just because of the national issues that have weighed heavily on our organization these past 12 months. But because of the way we met these challenges, reached a consensus on difficult issues and then moved forward to keep serving America’s young people in the true spirit of Scouting. Thanks to all of you, we demonstrated to the nation and to the world how we can disagree yet remain focused on what unites us — delivering a quality Scouting experience to the youth of America. I can’t tell you how proud I was this year to

witness the birth of one of Scouting’s most historic and unforgettable moments: the July opening of the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve as the new home of our national jamboree. The faces of our Scouts and Venturers told the story — the Summit was an absolute hit! Experiencing the monster zip line, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and breaking of new trails gave way to breathtaking views of the New River Gorge region of West Virginia. What a great gift to our Scouts and Venturers, and to America! These are memories of new outdoor adventures that will last a lifetime. With the addition of the Summit to our

already strong high-adventure base roster (Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier and

Florida Sea Base), along with our council camp programs nationwide, we offer outdoor adventure programs second to none. Looking ahead, we have much work to do. It’s

hard to believe that in just five-and-a-half years, the Summit will host the World Scout Jamboree. And in the midst of that massive undertaking, we have weekly Scout meetings, weekend campouts, service projects, summer camps, recognition banquets, recruitment, another national jamboree and many

other moving parts of our program to keep running in high gear. You’ve all done well. Best wishes for the holiday season! Let’s look forward to the adventures 2014 will bring.
