Know Your Market


If your council is struggling to recruit new Scouts and Venturers, you might look in the mirror — and ask how closely you reflect the community you serve. That’s what Ernest Espinoza, assistant director of field service at the Chicago Area


Council, learned in his diverse community. “We have about a 30-30-30 split between African Americans, Anglos and Hispanics,” Espinoza says. “And it’s even more diverse than that. We have one of the largest Polish communi- ties, not to mention many Lithuanians and Italians. We have not only Mexicans but Colombians, Puerto Ricans and Ecuadorians.” So, Espinoza’s group tries to hire staff


who reflect that community and who can use their linguistic and cultural ties to bring more people into Scouting. Espinoza also advocates aggressive net-


working. After he went through a training session at the Metro Leadership Institute in Chicago, he found “a whole new avenue” to CEOs and other professionals in the Hispanic community. “I was able to go to a lot of their meetings and recruit folks for Scouting,” he says. “These are the folks you want to have as leaders for kids.”
