That spirit reminded Bashinelli of lessons he learned in Scouting. “You don’t just live for yourself,” he says. “You serve the larger community. I remem- ber all of us Scouts pitching in on jobs together. And everyone is equal. No matter how much money your parents have, everyone chips in to clean up the fire pits or the latrine.” And that’s the sort of thinking that

apparently appeals to Dr. Goodall. “Chris Bashinelli is an inspiration to youth world- wide,” she says. “We need more people like Chris in the world.” Bashinelli is inspired by his late father, Stephen Bashinelli, a Scoutmaster himself. Look for the Bridge the Gap episode on

Pine Ridge in early 2013 on PBS. And follow Bashinelli on Twitter, @ChrisBashinelli.

ADVISORY Is Your Camp A Champ?

Camping is at the heart of Scouting, and now the BSA’s National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP) will help councils make their camps better than ever. The final edition of the NCAP will be released at the end of the 2012 camping season fol- lowing a pilot phase in which 13 councils will test the new standards. Find out how to be a BSA-accredited camp at bit.ly/ campaccreditation.
