SHOUT OUT

SCUBA Scout Ben Henneberger of Troop 97 in Waynesboro, Pa., receives his Eagle award at Epcot in Orlando, Fla. “I feel freer in the water than anywhere else,” says the longtime SCUBA diver and BSA lifeguard (seen at left in the underwater photo). Ben’s service project involved clearing underwater obstacles from a lake. He hopes to become a Navy diver, like his father, Doug Henneberger, below.

INSIDE THE MUSEUM ‘Uncle Dan’ Drew It

This holiday season, drop by the National Scouting Museum in Texas (bsamuseum. org) to see one of two recently acquired original ink drawings by one of Scouting’s founders, Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941). “Uncle Dan,” as he’s often called, illus-

trated and wrote a story in the December 1929 Boys’ Life titled “Christmas Thoughts, Fancy and Fantasies,” which museum curator Corry Kanzenberg describes as “a rambling little article on Santa’s origins, Scouting in America, and end-of-year reflections. “It’s interesting that all of Scouting’s found-

ers (Beard, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, and Ernest Thompson Seton) were skilled draftsman,” Kanzenberg says. She notes that Beard was quite an accomplished artist, having illustrated the first edition of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
