AS I HIKE ALONG a leaf-covered trail, afternoon rain slices through the morning’s salty, ocean-air fog. It’s pouring, yet underneath the canopy of 300-foot redwoods and sequoias I can hardly feel a drop. A flash of school-bus yellow


catches my eye: A slimy, florescent banana slug, about the size of my hand, inches across the path on its way to its next leaf buffet. In the wil- derness along this rugged coastline, you might see more banana slugs than fellow hikers. Stepping over roots and continu- ing on through lush, green ferns, I see

four towering limekilns appear like a mirage. These turn-of-the-century structures, still intact, were once used to make mortar from limestone. They now stand as reminders of the area’s manufacturing past. The trail steers me back toward


the ocean where a lookout station reveals a secluded beach in the dis- tance. Beyond the sand, otters dive into kelp-laced sea and emerge with lunch. Seals sunbathe. In the spring, pods of gray whales will migrate north past this shoreline. It’s a view that’s almost too good to be true. I ask myself, Where Am I? ¿
