A Leader Returns Join me in welcoming Robert Gates as our next BSA National President.

I’D LIKE TO BE among the first to welcome former U.S. Secretary of Defense and former CIA Director Robert Gates to the national executive board of the Boy Scouts of America. Gates will serve as a member of the board’s executive committee and begin his two-year term as the BSA’s national president in May. As one of the nation’s most respected public servants, Gates brings

tremendous vision and passion to Scouting that will help us continue our focus on providing extraordinary service to America’s young people. I have worked with him on a number of occasions and found him to have a deep, personal devotion to Scouting. It’s terrific to have someone with his Scouting experience in this

national leadership role: a past member of the national executive board; a past president of the National Eagle Scout Association; a Distinguished Eagle Scout; recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest commendation given by the BSA for extraordinary service to youth; and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the highest mark of distinction and recognition for those with excep- tional service and unselfish interests. Gates will provide valuable insights

as we bring more life-changing experi- ences to America’s youth and continue to grow our programs that prepare young people to be great citizens and outstand- ing leaders. Make sure you read Scouting’s interview with Gates on page 4 of this

issue. You will see what a great contributor he will be to our mission in his new role. Scouting’s future is in great hands. We need dedi-

cated leaders like Gates and other national presidents who have preceded him to provide the guidance and motivation to achieve our mission and contribute to growth. I congratulate our leadership for their thoughtful, strategic succession planning in bringing strong leaders like Gates on board. I urge all of you to work with Gates and offer your
