WHERE AM I? Path Less Traveled

LOOKING UP AT the seven-foot slope of orange rock, I’m starting to second- guess our decision to explore a lesser-known arch during a recent hike. To stand beneath the arch’s yawning shadow, one must first scramble up the wall I’m now facing. This short upward hand-foot

exchange requires some guts. I spot my path and decide to work fast — before my fear of heights can catch up to my body. Atop the ledge, I traverse to our destination. This square-shaped arch — unlike

its many curved siblings — frames a spectacular view of the sandy surround- ings. My eyes focus on a nearby town. Up here, away from the paths most often traveled, we’ve escaped the bustle of fellow hikers and can enjoy a solitary moment in this orange outdoor haven.

This nook is accessible by foot, moun-

tain bike or four-wheel-drive vehicle. And, of course, those willing to do a little hard work (like scrambling) reap the reward of a breathtaking view. See it for yourself. First, Where Am I? ¿
