COUNTDOWN TO 2013

A PIECE OF THE ACTION Even if you don’t plan to accompany a troop or serve on staff at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, the first held at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, you can still take part in the fun.

MILESTONES Century at Sea

It might be “one of the best-kept secrets” of the BSA, says Keith Christopher about the 7,000-member Sea Scouts. “People hear about the program and ask me when it started,” Christopher says. “I say, ‘Well, 100 years ago.’” Christopher, Sea Scouts’ national director, believes the exciting activities

planned for the 100th anniversary of Sea Scouts this year will help put an end to those questions. So does George Kain, operations officer for the Baltimore Sea Scouts Centennial event. The biggest candle on the anniversary cake, Kain says, will be ScoutFleet 2012, planned for July 18-23 at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Kain expects a large contingent from the Chesapeake Sea Scout Flotilla

and many participants from other regions, possibly including Sea Scouts from overseas. Many will arrive by and sleep aboard their own vessels, while others will bunk on the USS Constitution and other historic ships. You can find more details and sign-up information at newseascout.org. ScoutFleet represents the largest event of the Centennial celebration, but Sea Scouts elsewhere don’t have to miss the boat. Centennial activities nationwide will adhere to the Four S’s of Sea Scouts: Scouting, Seamanship, Service, and Social. Christopher emphasizes that Sea Scouts aren’t confined to the coasts. “Anywhere there’s a body of water, we have ships,” he says— including Dallas, Las Vegas, and Kansas City.

GOTTA HAVE IT Lens Crafted

Can one of your coolest gadgets get cooler? Yep. Just add the PhotoJojo iPhone Telephoto Lens to your iPhone, where, face it: the original built-in lens is perhaps its weakest link. When you attach the robust 8X lens, we

guarantee you’ll have a totally new view. For your artsy shots, break out the included collapsible tripod that twists to shoot from any angle. The PhotoJojo lens, compatible with iPhone 4 and 4S, comes with a case and a cleaning cloth. $35, photojojo.com/store.

10 S COUTING ¿ MARCH•APRIL 2012 Mike Patrick, general manager of the Summit,

encourages unregistered day visitors to purchase tickets and get their jambo on with some of the event’s mind- and body-stimulating activities. Think two parallel zip lines, a climbing wall (above), moun- tain and BMX biking, and shooting sports, as well as a variety of musical entertainment and military dem- onstrations—not to mention the huge “extravaganza show” on the final evening in an 80,000-seat arena. Check in regularly at summit.scouting.org for more details on the exciting opportunities for day visitors. Incidentally, that’s also where you’ll sign up to partici- pate or serve as a volunteer staff member at the big event, in case that’s the way you want to roll.
